Beirut MPs Announce Conference to Declare City ‘Demilitarized’ Amid Rising Tensions

Beirut: MPs reject targeting of government and Prime Minister, announce conference to declare Beirut a 'demilitarized city' upcoming Thursday. In an issued statement following a broad meeting by Beirut MPs on Saturday, they condemned the Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, including the capital Beirut, which have caused civilian casualties among residents of the city.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the participating deputies rejected attempts to drag Lebanon into a war it has no involvement in, and also denounced acts of incitement and unrest in Beirut, as these endanger public safety and national unity.

The MPs expressed full support for the government decisions aimed at extending state sovereignty, reinforcing the state's exclusive right to decide on war and peace, and confining weapons to the legitimate security forces, while opposing any targeting of the government and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

They also welcomed the cabinet's decision to declare Beirut a "weapons-free city" and endorsed the deployment of the Lebanese Army and security forces to enforce comprehensive security measures, prevent armed appearances and maintain stability in the capital.

The attending deputies also announced in their statement their plan to hold a conference on April 16, 2026, bringing together elected representatives, economic bodies, and civil society groups in Beirut to develop a unified stance on recent developments and the state's role in safeguarding the capital, its residents and facilities.
