Lacroix visits Hariri: Cooperation between Lebanese authorities and UNIFIL is very important to us

The President of the Council of Ministers Saad Hariri received today at the Grand Serail the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, in the presence of the UN Special coordinator for Lebanon Jan Kubis, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Stefano Del Col, the Director of the UN Middle East Division Susanne Rose and an accompanying delegation.

After the meeting, Lacroix said: “We had a very good discussion with Prime Minister Hariri and I really appreciated that he reiterated his support and his government’s support to UNIFIL. We discussed the cooperation we have between the Lebanese authorities and UNIFIL and I underlined how important this cooperation is. We are working in the southern part of Lebanon, an area with a population we know well. We have been interacting with them for many years, as well as with the local authorities, with the national authorities of Lebanon, and with the Lebanese security forces and armed forces.

This is absolutely central to us. If we don’t have that cooperation, we cannot implement our mandate and we cannot contribute to preserving this relatively peaceful situation. The fact that today we have a new government in Lebanon and the possibility to move forward on some important projects regarding the strengthening of the Lebanese armed forces present in the South, the strengthening of the maritime capacity of the Lebanese armed forces, the possibility to further increase the number of Lebanese forces in the south, all of this is very important to us because we are working with the Lebanese authorities and security forces and we look forward to doing more of this. Again, it is a good atmosphere and coordination that we have and we will continue the good work with the government and all the Lebanese partners.”

Hariri also met with the Advisor at the International Monetary Fund’s Middle East and Central Asia Department Chris Jarvis.

He also received the Moroccan Ambassador to Lebanon Mohamed Grine and discussed with him the bilateral relations.

Earlier, he met with a delegation from the American University of Beirut that presented to him an invitation to sponsor the opening of the ABLE Summit that will be held on the eleventh of April.
