EU condemns Iran executions

The European Union Friday “condemned in the strongest possible terms” today’s executions of three Iranians connected with the recent protests in the country.

EU Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Peter Stano, in a statement called once again on the Iranian authorities to “immediately end the practice of imposing and carrying out death sentences against protesters.” Majid Kazemi, Saeed Yaghoubi and Saleh Mirhashemi were the ones in this case. The three were accused of carrying out an attack that killed three security officers in Isfahan in November 2022 during anti-government protests.

“The EU urges the Iranian authorities to uphold their obligations under international law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party,” he said.

“Fundamental rights, including the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, must be respected in all circumstances,” he added.
