EU DELEGATION TO LEBANON CONDEMNS TAYOUNEH INCIDENTS

The European Union delegation in Lebanon condemned, in a statement, the events of Tayouneh, in which a number of people were killed and many were injured, as a result of a shooting in Beirut, during a demonstration against the judge leading the investigation into the explosion in the port of Beirut.

The delegation expressed its condolences to the families of the victims, and called for “the utmost restraint to avoid further senseless loss of life.”

The EU delegation also urged all parties and leaders to act calmly and responsibly to prevent an escalation of violence at this critical moment for Lebanon.

“The priority must be a constructive and urgent treatment of all the crises that Lebanon and its people “have endured for too long,” the statement added.

The statement stressed the need to complete the investigation into the port explosion as soon as possible.

“The investigation must be impartial, credible, transparent and independent. The investigation must be allowed to continue without any interference in legal process and those responsible for the explosion must be ultimately held to account,” it added.

“It is up to the Lebanese authorities to enable the investigation to continue by securing all necessary financial and human resources,” it concluded.
