Beirut: Lebanese Forces Party leader Samir Geagea has voiced his opposition to a proposed two-year extension of the Lebanese parliament's term. In a statement, Geagea highlighted recent attempts by some factions to leverage the current crisis in Lebanon to prolong their parliamentary mandates.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Geagea acknowledged the severe challenges Lebanon is facing due to ongoing conflicts but argued that the situation does not justify a two-year delay in parliamentary elections. He emphasized that the crisis, though severe, is not expected to hinder the electoral process for an extended period.
Geagea's 'Strong Republic' Bloc has introduced a draft law recommending a six-month postponement of elections, rather than a two-year extension. He stressed that Lebanon should avoid further damaging its constitutional structures and urged parliamentary members to support the draft law, which aims to balance the current crisis with the need to maintain governmental integrity.
