Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Minister Gebran Bassil on Friday said that he was not attending the Lebanese Diaspora Energy conference, currently taking place in Abidjan, out of his keenness for the safety of participants.
“I’m not present at the conference in fear of you being subject to any danger,” Minister Bassil addressed the Second Diaspora Energy conference participants via a video link.
“I do not accept any physical harm to any expat, or any moral harm to the whole Diaspora,” he said, adding that he was present though at the Conference through his thoughts and word and through the attending expatriates who placed their Lebanese identity above any other consideration.
“You are the heroes of Lebanon and the Diaspora,” he said.
Minister Bassil also brought to attention that he has relentlessly worked with the emigrants on uniting the Diaspora work through the LDE, stressing “We are people who want only peace and reject war.”
He underlined living together as equal partners, rejecting practicing hegemony against each other.
“If I have to apologize to you, forgiveness can only be solicited from God,” Bassil remarked, asking participants to forgive him if his love for his country is bigger than his love for his family.
