Lebanon Condemns Shooting Incidents Targeting UNIFIL Patrols

Beirut: The Foreign Ministry on Monday strongly condemned the shooting that targeted patrols of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Sunday, March 15, 2026, during three separate incidents near its bases in Yater, Deir Kifa, and Qlaileh. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the ministry described the attack on the peacekeeping force as a serious and unacceptable act that constitutes a violation of international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions. It noted that under its mandate and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, UNIFIL has the right to take the necessary measures to defend itself and resist attempts to obstruct its mission by force. The ministry affirmed Lebanon's full solidarity with UNIFIL, its leadership, and the countries contributing troops, expressing deep appreciation for the force's role in supporting peace, security, and stability in southern Lebanon. It also recalled a Cabinet decision issued on March 2, 2026, banning military and secu rity activities by Hezbollah, declaring them illegal and obligating the group to hand over its weapons to the Lebanese state. The ministry stressed that the government's position is clear and unequivocal, stating that no armed group outside the framework of the state will be allowed to drag Lebanon into chaos in service of suspicious agendas. It reaffirmed Lebanon's determination to impose its sovereignty across its entire territory and to restrict weapons to the country's legitimate institutions in order to safeguard national security and protect the interests of the Lebanese people.
