Lebanon’s Diversity and Partnership Under Threat, Says Bassil

Paris:France Lebanon's main challenge today is preserving its cultural diversity and ensuring full partnership among its communities, according to Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Gebran Bassil.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, Bassil emphasized the importance of safeguarding Lebanon's unique identity and pluralistic nature during an "Ask Gebran" event in France. He questioned whether the Lebanese still value living together and supporting Lebanon's model based on diversity and partnership.

Bassil argued that despite the sacrifices involved, Lebanon's experience of pluralism remains preferable to a single ideology. He highlighted the need for Lebanese citizens to shape the political system and define the country's role while preserving individual freedoms and rights.

Reflecting on the anniversary of October 13, Bassil underscored its spiritual and national significance, honoring the efforts of those who fought to maintain Lebanon's identity and diversity. He noted the historical importance of Patriarch Elias Howayek's role in establishing Greater Lebanon, as commemorated by a statue at Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral in Paris.

Bassil warned against foreign attempts to exert control over Lebanon and urged the protection of its model of partnership and openness. He praised Lebanese expatriates for embodying Lebanon's message of integration while maintaining their heritage.

He concluded by asserting that Lebanon's future relies on the people's commitment to coexistence and the protection of pluralism, freedoms, and rights, which he described as essential for the Lebanese experience's survival.
