Lebanon’s Information Minister Calls Emergency Meeting with Media to Address Discourse Amid Crisis

Beirut: Information Minister Dr. Paul Morcos convened an emergency meeting with media institutions to discuss the current media discourse in response to Lebanon's ongoing challenges. The meeting, which aimed to preserve internal peace and stability while preventing sectarian and inciting rhetoric, was attended by key figures from various media outlets.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, today's gathering included notable attendees such as the Chairman of the National Media Council, Abdel Hadi Mahfouz; the Dean of the Press Syndicate, Awni al-Kaaki; and the Head of the Editors Syndicate, Joseph Al-Qusaifi. Other prominent figures included Dr. Hassan Falha, Director General of the Ministry of Information, Dr. Elissar Naddaf, Chair of the Board of Directors and Director General of Tele Liban, and Mohammad Gharib, Director of Radio Lebanon.

The meeting began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of the Israeli aggression against Lebanon, especially honoring Mohammad Sherri, Director of Al-Manar TV Political Programs. Minister Morcos expressed gratitude to media professionals for their presence and emphasized the importance of their role in safeguarding society during these challenging times.

Minister Morcos highlighted the need for unity and responsible media discourse in light of the ongoing Israeli aggression and its repercussions on Lebanon. He stressed that the media should act as a partner in national responsibility, focusing on the needs of the country and its people, especially during times of conflict.

Morcos called for wisdom and foresight, urging media outlets to avoid content that could incite unrest or deepen divisions. He reaffirmed the Ministry of Information's commitment to freedom of opinion and expression, while underscoring the importance of responsible media practices that prioritize the national interest.

In his closing remarks, Minister Morcos assured continued engagement with media outlets, including online platforms, to foster a media environment that serves Lebanon's best interests. He encouraged media professionals to work collaboratively towards a media landscape that promotes strength and unity.

The meeting concluded with a presentation of a video, created by the Ministry of Information in collaboration with UNESCO's Beirut office and the International Organization of La Francophonie, addressing the issue of verifying false and misleading news. Attendees agreed on principles such as maintaining professional standards, refraining from inciting content, verifying information, adopting balanced discourse, and supporting unity among the Lebanese people amid current challenges.
