BEIRUT: Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi has issued a strong call for the timely and fair conduct of Lebanon’s upcoming presidential election, emphasizing the importance of political responsibility among the nation’s leaders. He warned against any postponement, which he said could erode trust both domestically and internationally.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Al-Rahi, speaking during his New Year’s Day homily, identified January 9 as a crucial date for Lebanon, as Parliament is scheduled to meet to elect a new President of the Republic. He expressed optimism that the consultations would yield a leader equipped to navigate the pressing challenges facing the country.

Al-Rahi stressed the necessity of holding the election without delay, cautioning that any postponement would compromise the trust of the Lebanese populace and the international community. “Beware of postponing the election for any reason,” he warned, underscoring the potential consequences for the nation’s lawmakers.

The Patriarch also highlighted the importance of ensuring that Lebanon remains free from control by any single individual or group. “Lebanon belongs to all its citizens, not just a faction,” he declared, emphasizing the need for an inclusive approach to governance.

Al-Rahi reiterated that the candidate who secures the requisite votes, as outlined in Article 49 of the Lebanese Constitution, will serve as the President for all Lebanese people. He urged a collective mindset in the electoral process. “Let us pray for the establishment of a just and lasting peace in our land, and for the election of a President on the ninth of this month who is worthy of the role and Lebanon’s greater good,” he concluded.
