Middle East Council of Churches to Hold Conference on Countering Hate Speech in Cairo
Cairo:The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), in collaboration with the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services (CEOSS) and supported by the Presbyterian Church (USA), The United Church of Canada, and the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (KAICIID), is set to host a regional conference in Cairo from October 4 to 6, 2026. The event will focus on "Countering Hate Speech Promoting Human Dignity and Living Together."
According to National news agency - Lebanon, the conference aims to bring together researchers, religious leaders, and experts from various fields to discuss the causes, forms, and implications of hate speech. It will explore practical approaches and mechanisms to promote human dignity, social cohesion, and harmonious living.
The event will commence on Sunday, October 4, with a reception and networking gathering, featuring an official opening and welcome to participants. Rev. Dr. Andrea Zaki, President of the Protestant Churches of Egypt and Head of CEOSS, along with Dr. Michel Abs, Secretary General of the MECC, will be among the main speakers. Dr. Laure Abi Khalil will outline the conference's general framework, objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes.
Throughout the three-day conference, participants will discuss hate speech from religious, social, legal, educational, and media perspectives. Sessions will also examine the role of digital platforms and artificial intelligence in addressing and mitigating hate speech.
The conference will also focus on public policies and regional initiatives aimed at enhancing social cohesion. It will conclude on Tuesday, October 6, with a presentation of the consolidated outcomes from the thematic discussions. A closed working session will review the Regional Declaration and recommendations before the official closing session, which will feature the adoption of the Regional Declaration and the launch of an associated campaign and hashtag.
The MECC Media Department will provide extensive media coverage of the event through its media and digital platforms, in collaboration with media partners, documenting sessions, discussions, and key contributions and outcomes of the conference.
