Morcos: Information Ministry Not a Repressive Authority, Calls for Responsible Media in Wartime

Beirut: Information Minister, Paul Morcos, on Thursday stressed that the ministry is "not a repressive authority," emphasizing its limited regulatory role under audiovisual laws and its focus on prevention, awareness, and partnership with media professionals.

According to National Nws Aency - Lebanon, Morcos urged journalists and social media users to avoid hate speech and incitement, particularly amid war, calling instead for unity around humanitarian priorities. The Minister highlighted efforts to curb misinformation, including activating a fact-checking unit in cooperation with UNESCO, and stressed that violations fall under judicial, not ministerial, authority.

Morcos reaffirmed respect for press freedom, while underscoring the need for responsible discourse to safeguard civil peace and national stability.
