INTER-MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE CONVENING AT GRAND SERAIL TACKLES GENERAL CLOSURE EXTENSION TILL FEBRUARY 8

Caretaker Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, today chaired at the Grand Serail, a coronavirus Inter-Ministerial Committee meeting. The meeting was attended by Ministers Zeina Akar, Raoul Nehme, Mohammad Fahmi, Imad Hoballah, Ramzi Musharrafieh, Hamad Hassan (via Zoom), and Vartine Ohanian, in addition to the Director General of the Lebanese Presidency, Antoine Choucair, PCM Secretary General, Judge Mahmoud Makie, and PM Advisor, Khodor Taleb.

The Committee took stock at the results of the general lockdown scheduled until January 25, 2021 and the level of commitment in various regions, hailing the Lebanese people’s response to the measures that have been implemented. The Committee deliberated as well on the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, number of infections, hospitals’ ICU capacity for Covid-19 patients, and the high mortality rate. These data constitute a critical indicator requiring the extension of the general lockdown and the tightening of measures in various regions, while continuing to increase the number of ICU beds in public and private hospitals.

The Inter-ministerial Committee reviewed the report of the technical committee for the follow-up of coronavirus- related measures and procedures, as well as the Ministry of Health’s scientific committee, both recommending that the nation-wide lockdown be extended for an additional two weeks. The Inter-ministerial Committee thus decided to extend the general closure for an additional two weeks, until February 8, 2021, according to the same conditions currently in force.

Premier Diab reiterated the request that the Minister of Health speeds up the development of:

– Vaccination plan

– Post-closure plan

– Plan to confront the new coronavirus strains

Relevant plans shall be referred to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers for discussion with the Inter-ministerial Committee. The Minister of Health promised to finalize and submit the plans to the Prime Minister next Saturday.

The Committee also called on all citizens and residents to continue to adhere to the measures taken with the aim of curbing the spread of the epidemic and protecting society and citizens from the dangers of this epidemic. The Committee asked the military and security services to continue to strictly enforce the general closure. — Presidency of the Council of Ministers Press Office
