Beirut: Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam held a significant meeting at the Grand Serail with Charles Fries, the Deputy Secretary-General for Peace, Security and Defense at the European External Action Service (EEAS). Accompanied by EU Ambassador to Lebanon Sandra De Waele and a delegation from the Union, the focus of the discussion was on the European Union’s continued support for the Lebanese Army and the Internal Security Forces.
According to the National News Agency – Lebanon, the meeting emphasized the necessity of maintaining the European Union’s support for Lebanese security forces. Discussions also covered the Lebanese government’s initiatives to enhance state authority and the priorities concerning security and military efforts, which could benefit from European Union assistance.
The EU delegation stressed the critical need for the Lebanese government to maintain its reform trajectory and to secure an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
In a separate engagement, Prime Minister Salam met with Sheikh Ali Qaddour, head of the Alawite Islamic Council, and Sheikh Ahmed Assi, head of the Council’s Religious Affairs Department. Sheikh Qaddour praised the Prime Minister for his efforts in promoting a state governed by law and institutions.
The meeting also addressed the demands and rights of the Alawite sect and issues concerning Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
