Beirut: General Superior Sister Marie Makhlouf delivered a speech during Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the Psychiatric Hospital of the Cross, emphasizing the hospital’s mission to embrace those whom society often overlooks. She welcomed the Pope, acknowledging his advocacy for peace and his engagement with the marginalized.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Sister Marie Makhlouf expressed gratitude for the Pope’s presence, which she described as a testament to the Church’s love for the most afflicted individuals, referring to them as “the little brothers of Jesus.” She highlighted the significant role of the hospital in showing the world that these individuals are not burdens but rather treasures cherished by the Church.

Sister Marie spoke of the hospital’s resilience in the face of adversity, including explosions, hunger, epidemics, and institutional collapse. Despite lacking resources, the hospital continues to provide refuge, relying on divine providence and the legacy of their founder, Abouna Yaacoub. She described their work as a daily miracle, sustained by the generosity of benefactors and divine intervention.

Sister Marie also expressed hope for the canonization of Abouna Yaacoub, calling him a beacon of love for the poor and a symbol of coexistence. She praised his dedication to the suffering and his establishment of institutions for their aid. In her closing remarks, she thanked Pope Leo XIV for his compassion towards the forgotten and assured him of their continued prayers.
