Rome: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, and First Lady, Mrs. Nemat Aoun, arrived in Rome this afternoon, heading directly from the airport to the Armenian Pontifical School. They were received by Armenian Catholic Patriarch Raphael Bedros XXI Minassian, along with several bishops and priests.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, a short sermon was conducted at the School’s church, followed by a meeting in the School’s hall. The meeting included Patriarch Minassian, bishops, priests, and members of the Armenian Catholic community from various countries. They gathered to participate in the upcoming Mass at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City for the canonization of Blessed Archbishop Ignatius Maloyan.
Patriarch Minassian expressed gratitude to President Aoun and the First Lady for attending the canonization event, emphasizing the significance of their presence. He highlighted the enduring history of the Armenian Church in Lebanon and underscored President Aoun’s role as a testament to Lebanon’s resilience and enduring faith. Minassian praised Aoun’s leadership as the only Christian president in the Middle East, acknowledging the hope and peace he brings to Lebanon.
Minassian awarded President Aoun the “Cross of Faith,” the highest order in the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate, recognizing his noble qualities and leadership in Lebanon. President Aoun expressed his appreciation for the honor and shared his joy at joining the faithful in Rome for the canonization ceremony.
President Aoun paid tribute to the late Bishop Maloyan, describing him as “a saint for all humanity” who sacrificed his life for his beliefs. He also emphasized the importance of education, urging clergy to continue promoting it as the foundation for building nations, especially Lebanon.
Before departing, President Aoun confirmed Lebanon’s preparations to welcome His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, stating that all arrangements for the visit are underway.
