Beirut: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, expressed strong support for the recent parliamentary initiative advocating for the extension of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun emphasized the crucial role of UNIFIL in maintaining stability in southern Lebanon. He highlighted that UNIFIL's presence is vital for the residents, helping them remain in their villages and towns, and for bolstering cooperation with the Lebanese Army to ensure security.
President Aoun outlined two potential courses of action: the preferred option of extending UNIFIL's mandate, and an alternative plan to establish a framework that allows for the continued presence of international forces in the south. This would involve international forces working alongside the Lebanese Army to support stability and fulfill their duties effectively.
He pointed out ongoing opposition from Israel, which has been pressuring for the removal of UNIFIL for nearly a year. Despite this, Lebanon is determined to find a solution that ensures the continuation of an international presence in the south, reinforcing stability and the authority of the Lebanese state and its army.
