Salameh Highlights Archaeological Significance in Beqaa Visit

Beqaa: The Minister of Culture, Dr. Ghassan Salameh, conducted an extensive tour of archaeological sites in the Bekaa region. Accompanied by Engineer Sarkis Khoury, Director General of the Directorate of Antiquities, and Dr. Raffi Jerjian, Director of Antiquities for Central and Western Bekaa, the visit aimed to emphasize the critical role these sites play in Lebanon’s cultural and economic landscape.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Minister Salameh began the day with a visit to Anjar Castle, where he stressed the importance of ongoing research and preservation to promote archaeological tourism. He pointed out that sites like Anjar are not merely historical treasures but are essential for the accurate scientific rewriting of Lebanon’s history. Salameh also highlighted the potential economic benefits, referencing his efforts to secure significant World Bank funding in his previous term to stimulate activity around major archaeological sites.

The delegation then moved to Kamed al-Loz in Western Bekaa, where Minister Salameh reinforced the notion that preserving antiquities is a national duty, not a luxury. He connected the archaeological wealth of the Bekaa Valley to the region’s historical significance, noting how each discovery contributes to the broader narrative of Lebanon’s past. Salameh emphasized that investment in culture and antiquities serves as a catalyst for economic recovery and cultural tourism.

In Kamed al-Loz, local officials, including MP Charbel Maroun and the Mayor, Dr. Abdul Hakim Waked, welcomed Salameh, acknowledging the city’s rich history as a crossroad of ancient civilizations. The visit included a detailed presentation at the Kamed el-Loz archaeological site, where ongoing rehabilitation efforts were showcased.

Minister Salameh concluded his tour at Niha Castle in Zahle, where he reviewed future projects like the integration of archaeological artifacts into new constructions and plans for a museum dedicated to the restoration history of Lebanon. The Niha Fort site, with its Roman and Byzantine structures, was highlighted as a significant cultural and historical asset, with ongoing efforts to enhance its visibility to visitors.

Throughout his visit, Minister Salameh reiterated the state’s responsibility in supporting its citizens and recognizing their role in safeguarding heritage and national identity, positioning Lebanon’s rich archaeological legacy as a cornerstone for cultural and economic revitalization.
