Washington: A senior Russian negotiator on Thursday announced that he is holding talks in Washington with representatives of US President Donald Trump’s administration.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s special envoy for foreign investment and economic cooperation, stated on Telegram that he began two days of discussions on Wednesday, following a request from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Dmitriev emphasized the importance of the dialogue between Russia and the United States, noting that it had been “completely destroyed” during the tenure of former US President Joe Biden.
Dmitriev pointed out that “numerous forces” are interested in maintaining global tensions and obstructing the restoration of constructive dialogue across many countries. He claimed these forces are deliberately misrepresenting Russia’s position to sabotage any progress towards dialogue, using considerable resources to do so.
He further expressed that those resisting rapprochement fear that Russia and the US might find “common ground” and begin to enhance their political and economic cooperation. Despite acknowledging the challenges and gradual nature of restoring dialogue, Dmitriev remained optimistic, stating that each meeting and candid conversation contributes to progress.
Dmitriev concluded by highlighting that a genuine understanding of Russia’s position could unlock new opportunities for constructive engagement, especially in the areas of investment and economic cooperation.
