Beirut: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres launched a Flash Humanitarian Appeal of 308.3 million US dollars in Beirut to provide urgent support to the people of Lebanon, where more than 816,000 people have been displaced internally.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Guterres emphasized the need for solidarity in action to match words, as the military escalation in the region has gravely affected Lebanon. The humanitarian appeal aims to address critical needs, including access to food, water, healthcare, education, and other basic services, which have been severely disrupted.
The Secretary-General highlighted the tragic toll the conflict has had on civilians, with many killed, including children, and entire communities uprooted. He noted the resilience shown by Lebanese communities and the efforts of United Nations agencies and humanitarian partners working with national authorities to provide essential relief, including hot meals, clean water, and hygiene supplies.
The appeal seeks to sustain and expand life-saving assistance over the next three months, contingent on swift and flexible funding. Guterres called for ensuring that humanitarian workers can safely reach those most in need, especially during the holy month of Ramadan and Lent, which underscore the values of compassion and generosity.
Guterres concluded by urging the international community to support Lebanon's immediate needs and long-term stability, emphasizing the importance of establishing a ceasefire and creating conditions for peaceful negotiations. The United Nations stands ready to assist Lebanon in achieving lasting peace and territorial integrity.
