UNIFIL Accuses Israeli Forces of Violating International Law by Detaining Peacekeeper

Bkerki: United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon: Israeli forces detained one of its peacekeepers earlier in the evening after blocking a logistics convoy, before releasing him less than an hour later following direct contacts by the mission's leadership and liaison teams.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, UNIFIL stressed that the detention of a UN peacekeeper constitutes a blatant violation of international law. The organization emphasized that any interference with peacekeeping operations breaches UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which outlines the cessation of hostilities and mandates respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon.

The mission has called on all parties involved to respect the protected status of UN personnel and to refrain from any actions that obstruct their freedom of movement. UNIFIL's statement underlines the importance of allowing peacekeepers to perform their duties without hindrance in order to maintain stability and security in the region.
