National Education Minister, Dr. Abbas Halaby, asserted that he had received a promise from the President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, to discuss urgent issues related to the Lebanese University with Prime Minister, Najib Mikati. These issues include LU appointments and will be discussed in the next Cabinet session.<\/P>
<\/P>
Minister Halaby also pointed out that \u201cSo far, donors haven\u2019t responded to provide aid to teachers in the private sector\u201d and appealed to schools that did not meet the rights of their teachers especially in terms of paying the six stages for them.<\/P>
<\/P>
The positions of the Education Minister came after his meeting with President Aoun, today at the Presidential Palace, where ministerial affairs and the issue of the Educational Center for Research and Development were discussed.<\/P>

Statement:<\/P>
<\/P>
After the meeting, Minister Halaby made the following statement:<\/P>
<\/P>
\u201cI was honored to meet His Excellency, the President. I presented with him ministerial affairs, issues related to the Lebanese University, specifically the Educational Center for Development and Research.<\/P>
<\/P>
I asked His Excellency to agree to pass the decrees which I have sent to the Prime Minister, some months ago and others weeks ago, to present them to the Cabinet, since in light of the LU situation and the fear that it will slide further to collapse, these decrees may help meet the conditions, especially administrative and academic-educational ones. This will allow students to take exams which have been postponed for weeks due to the lack of the right atmosphere, especially since some students are in the last years of their specialization with the risks they face in academic achievements.<\/P>
<\/P>
The President said that perhaps these issues will be decided Wednesday after deliberation with the Prime Minister, in the Cabinet session. We also reviewed other issues related to the development of the educational center\u2019s work with regard to curricula and the process of developing them, because we are on the threshold of announcing the national framework for the new curricula\u201d.<\/P>

Questions & Answers:<\/P>
<\/P>
Question: What about the appointments at the Lebanese University, and what is said about the difficulties some schools face in terms of paying teacher and staff salaries?<\/P>
<\/P>
Answer: \u201cWe have not made any effort to secure additional bids to the educational body in public schools. As for private schools, there is a problem because we have approached the donors to provide some aid for teachers in private education, but so far there was no response to our request. Our endeavour is on-going and I am optimistic that we will soon reach what satisfies these teachers and answers some of their needs because it is difficult in light of the collapse of the national currency, the high cost of living and the costs of transportation, to continue in this situation. I also appeal to school administrations to do what is just, especially concerning schools who did not yet apply to the six stage. Teachers have rights, and we are with fulfilling these rights. Some school administrations have not yet fulfilled these rights, others have met these rights. We appeal on others to work to achieve these demands.<\/P>

As for appointments at the LU, I raised the issue today with the President and he promised that these matters would be presented to the Cabinet session which I hope will be agreed upon so that it will pass the day after tomorrow\u201d.<\/P>

National Defense Minister:<\/P>
<\/P>
President Aoun met National Defense Minister, Maurice Sleem, and discussed with him the security situation.<\/P>
<\/P>
The meeting also tackled the needs of institutions affiliated with the Defense Ministry, especially in the Army, in addition to the demarcation of southern maritime borders.<\/P>
<\/P>
Beirut Governor:<\/P>
<\/P>
The President received the Governor of Beirut, Judge Marwan Abboud, and discussed with him general and municipal affairs.<\/P>
