Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport, Ali Hamieh, stressed Sunday that the Israeli enemy’s continued violation of Lebanon’s airspace denotes “a flagrant violation of the Chicago Treaty of 1944, which guarantees the exclusive and complete sovereignty of states over their airspace,” calling on member states to “assume their responsibilities to address the dangers arising from these violations on civil aviation and on Lebanese airspace,” underlining “the need to hold the Israeli enemy responsible for its aggressions, to take deterrent measures against it, and to issue explicit condemnation by the Organization.”

Hamieh’s words came in his address at the 41st meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal – Canada today, where he presented to the participants a review of the continued violations practiced by the Israeli enemy over Lebanese airspace.

“Through its strategic geographical location, Lebanon has formed a link between East and West, throughout ancient and modern history, through its ports, or through its international airport, and despite the liberation of most of its land in 2000, its borders remained open to the Israeli enemy aircrafts’ almost daily violations and sometimes approaching civil aircrafts that cross the airspace or use the airport,” Hamieh went on.

He added: “The Israeli enemy has recently launched missile strikes on Syrian territory from Lebanese airspace, caring less for the risk its hostile actions may cause to the safety of civil aircrafts of all international airlines.”

“In this context, according to a report issued by the Lebanese Army Command in September 2022, there have been 10,887 hostile Israeli air violations during the last ten years,” Hamieh explained.

“We are confident of your understanding of the motives that necessitated the raising of the issue of air violations in this session of the General Assembly, hoping to take the appropriate position to address the issue, which can no longer bear any delay,” Hamieh asserted, affirming Lebanon’s keenness on strengthening cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization to ensure a safe and sustainable air transport.

On another note, the Minister expressed a word of gratitude, on behalf of the Lebanese government, to the State of Canada, its government and people, and the city of Montreal which hosts the Organization’s meeting, and to the General Secretariat and the ICAO for organizing this session, “which falls within the framework of the tireless efforts to keep abreast of all developments in the aviation and air transport sector, especially the promotion of the ‘No Country Left Behind’ initiative that aims to assist states in the effective implementation of SARPs and ICAO policies that Lebanon has benefited from to enhance its expertise and capabilities in the field of aviation.”

It is to note that Minister Hamieh is accompanied during his visit by a Lebanese official delegation including Lebanon’s Ambassador to Canada Fadi Ziadeh, Director General of Civil Aviation Fadi El-Hassan, Consul General of Lebanon in Montreal Tony Eid, Head of the Air Navigation Authority Kamal Nasreddine and Head of Civil Aviation Safety Omar Kadouha.
