Beirut:The American University of Beirut (AUB) held its student elections for the 2026-27 academic year with 255 candidates participating in the electoral process. This event, which took place on October 16, combined traditional campus campaigning with initiatives aimed at fostering student leadership and civic engagement.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, the elections saw 57 candidates vying for positions on the University Student Faculty Committee (USFC) and 198 candidates contesting seats on the Student Representative Committees (SRCs). The increase in candidates from the previous year's 233 reflects a growing interest among students to actively engage in university governance.

AUB President Dr. Fadlo Khuri expressed pride in the students' conduct and participation, noting the diverse viewpoints and backgrounds of those elected. He highlighted the university's role as a unique environment where free speech and diverse opinions are encouraged.

AUB Dean of Student Affairs Nayla Al-Akl remarked on the students' engagement in critical debates, which she believes are essential for developing leadership skills and fostering a sense of citizenship.

The Department of Political Studies and Public Administration, along with the PSPA Society, organized a workshop titled "Citizenship Beyond the Classroom" to link campus election participation with civic responsibilities. This included testimonials and guidance on effective campaigning and representation.

Candidates campaigned from October 12 to 14, engaging with peers and presenting their platforms. A debate organized by AUB's student publication, Outlook, provided a platform for candidates to discuss their priorities. A silence period followed before online voting took place from 1000 am to 400 pm on Election Day, with results announced at 600 pm.

AUB plans to continue supporting student leadership with an orientation for newly elected USFC members on October 21, ahead of their first official meeting. USFC cabinet elections are set for October 28.
