Baabda: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on Tuesday addressed members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Lebanon during the traditional New Year's greetings ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Baabda. He expressed gratitude to diplomats and representatives of international organizations for their ongoing support and engagement with Lebanon.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, President Aoun emphasized the importance of the gathering as a reflection of international relations and humanitarian objectives. He thanked the attendees for recognizing Lebanon's significance as a country and its necessity for the region and the world. President Aoun also expressed gratitude to the Apostolic Nuncio, Monsignor Paolo Borgia, and acknowledged the impact of Pope Leo XIV's visit to Lebanon.
The President highlighted the challenges he faced during his first year in office, noting the political vacuum and unrest Lebanon endured over the past two decades. He outlined his priorities, which include sovereignty, security, rebuilding state institutions, economic and financial reforms, and adherence to constitutional deadlines. Key decisions made by the government concerning the exclusivity of arms, operational control south of the Litani River, and the cessation of hostilities agreement were also discussed.
Furthermore, President Aoun mentioned preparations for an international conference to support the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces, the issuance of decrees to rebuild state institutions, progress on judicial and financial reforms, and the government's commitment to holding legislative elections. He also addressed Lebanon's foreign policy efforts, including the return to Arab and international legitimacy and Pope Leo XIV's visit.
Following the President's address, Monsignor Paolo Borgia delivered a speech on behalf of the diplomatic missions accredited in Lebanon. He extended best wishes to President Aoun and highlighted the significance of peace, emphasizing its moral, spiritual, and human dimensions. Monsignor Borgia warned against global conflicts and stressed the need for peace rooted in dialogue, justice, reconciliation, and education.
Monsignor Borgia described Lebanon as a model of coexistence and pluralism, affirming the possibility of Christians, Muslims, Druze, and others living together in mutual respect. He assured Lebanon of the Diplomatic Corps' support and extended best wishes to President Aoun and the Lebanese people.
The ceremony underscored Lebanon's ongoing commitment to peace, sovereignty, and reform, as it continues to navigate challenges and seek international support for its recovery and development.
