Berri Calls Joint Committee Session on Draft General Amnesty Law

Beirut: House Speaker, Nabih Berri, on Monday called a joint session of the Finance and Budget, Administration and Justice, National Defence, Interior and Municipalities, and Human Rights committees for 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The session will continue discussions on the draft law proposing a general amnesty and exceptional reductions in prison sentences.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, the proposed amnesty law aims to address issues related to overcrowding in prisons and to provide relief for certain categories of prisoners. The discussions are expected to focus on the eligibility criteria for the amnesty and the potential impact on the justice system.

The joint session reflects ongoing efforts to find legislative solutions to long-standing challenges in the penal system. Lawmakers will consider various aspects of the draft law, including the types of crimes that may qualify for amnesty and the mechanism for implementing sentence reductions.
