Berri Issues Warning Against Escalating Tensions in Lebanon

Beirut: House Speaker Nabih Berri has issued a stern warning against actions that could incite sedition in Lebanon. In a recent statement, Berri condemned the defamation and attacks on religious and national symbols from any faction, emphasizing the medium of media and social networks as platforms for these harmful campaigns. He urged all Lebanese citizens to recognize the dangers of falling into sectarian conflict, a scenario that he claims has been a longstanding goal of their common adversaries.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Berri highlighted recent incidents of violence and vandalism, citing the destruction of various religious sites including a school and convent of the Salvatorian Sisters, the Church of Saint George in Yaroun, and the statue of Jesus Christ in Dibel. He also mentioned the earlier demolition of the historic Grand Mosque in Bint Jbeil and the latest attack on a Husseiniya in Doueir. Berri suggested that these acts only serve to sow division among the Lebanese people, diverting them from their rights and potentially leading to internal conflict.

Berri further cautioned against the continuation of actions that could lead to what he described as a “cursed sedition,” urging national responsibility in extinguishing the flames of discord rather than inflaming them. He called on judicial authorities to take immediate action to hold accountable those who disrespect and harm the sanctity of religious and national messages, stressing the importance of maintaining unity and peace in the nation.
