Beirut: The Constitutional Council of the Lebanese Republic has suspended the effect of Law No. 70/2026, which pertains to the granting of a general amnesty and the exceptional reduction of certain prison sentences. This decision was formalized with the issuance of Decision No. 10/2026 on September 10, 2026.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the decision emerged from a session led by Constitutional Council President Judge Tannous Mechleb. The session was attended by member judges Aouni Ramadan, Ahmad Akram Baassiri, Albert Serhan, Riad Abou Ghaida, Fawaz Farhat, Michel Tarazi, Elias Machrekani, and Mireille Najem. Notably, Vice President Judge Omar Hamza was absent due to health reasons.

The Council reached its decision after deliberating on a challenge filed against Law No. 70/2026. By majority vote, the Council chose to suspend the law's effect. The decision also includes a formal notification to the President of the Republic, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Prime Minister. Additionally, the decision will be published in the Official Gazette.
