Beirut: British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, welcomed the recent extension of the ceasefire in Lebanon, highlighting the diplomatic efforts as a significant step forward. He emphasized that both parties must capitalize on this opportunity and respect the ceasefire agreement.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Cowell expressed his views on the "UK in Lebanon" platform X page. He stated, "An extension to the ceasefire in Lebanon is a welcome step. We must now see Lebanese communities return to their homes, the demolition of civilian infrastructure must end, and the protection of civilians must be guaranteed." Cowell criticized the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for their widespread demolition of civilian areas in southern Lebanon, stating that such actions undermine the ceasefire and must be halted immediately.
Cowell further stressed the importance of upholding international humanitarian law, ensuring that civilians can return to their homes without delay. He called for a long-term political settlement in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701, as essential for restoring stability and security for both the Lebanese and Israeli people.
