Beirut: The Supreme Islamic Sharia Council convened a session under the leadership of the Grand Mufti of the Republic, Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, to deliberate on issues concerning administrative, endowment, and Islamic affairs as well as the latest developments affecting Lebanon and the broader Arab and Islamic regions.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the Sharia Council, in a statement released after the session, underscored the importance of safeguarding the Lebanese state system and its constitutional institutions. It called on all Lebanese citizens to contribute to preserving the nation by reinforcing the state’s decision-making, role, and authority, ensuring the implementation of the Constitution and the Taif Agreement. The Council expressed concern over attempts to involve Lebanon in regional power struggles once again.

The Council acknowledged the efforts of the President and Prime Minister in steering negotiations in Washington aimed at liberating southern Lebanon from Israeli occupation. It also recognized the commitment of the Speaker of Parliament to national principles, particularly the liberation of southern Lebanon and ensuring that displaced southerners can return to their homes.

Furthermore, the Council emphasized the significance of Lebanese diplomatic efforts in collaboration with Arab nations, especially Saudi Arabia, to halt Zionist aggression and secure the withdrawal of enemy forces from southern Lebanon. It stressed that negotiations should solely aim to bring an end to the conflict in Lebanon.

Additionally, the Council called for the enactment of a general amnesty law to deliver justice and address the grievances of Islamist detainees and prisoners. It also praised the decision to initiate the Ren© Moawad-Qleiat Airport project, which is expected to have a positive economic, developmental, and social impact across Lebanon, particularly in Akkar and the North.

The Council also commended Saudi Arabia’s decision to restore confidence by reopening its markets to Lebanese exports, reinforcing the fraternal relations between the two nations and benefiting the Lebanese economy through economic exchanges.
