NNA – Caretaker Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, received the 2021 WSIS Award Committee, which included ESCWA Executive Secretary, Dr.  Rola Dashti, Deputy Executive Secretary, Dr.  Mounir Tabet, Director General of the Central Administration of Statistics (CAS), Dr. Maral Tutelian, Director General of the Ministry of Telecommunications, Bassel Ayoubi, Head of the Statistics Division at ESCWA, Dr. Juraj Riecan, and Head of the IT Department at CAS, Dr. Ziad Abdallah, in the presence of PCM Secretary-General, Judge Mahmoud Makie, and PM Advisor, Khodor Taleb.

After the meeting, Dashti congratulated the Lebanese for winning the 2021 Information Society Summit Award for the project  undertaken by the CAS, in cooperation with the Ministry of Telecommunications, ESCWA and international organizations, and which consists of using big data in the statistical process to generate social, demographic and economic data. She declared that this project had placed Lebanon and the CAS on the map of leading statistics agencies worldwide.

For her part, Tutelian thanked PM Diab for hosting the meeting during which he was informed that Lebanon had won the World Summit on the Information Society Award, for a pilot project  proposed by the CAS through ESCWA Executive Committee countries two years ago, and which was implemented in late 2020 and early 2021, that is, amidst the economic and health crisis, which makes it a big achievement for Lebanon. Most importantly, the project highlights the close cooperation between the public and private sectors.

In turn, the Director General of the Ministry of Telecommunications stated that the CAS, in cooperation with ESCWA, the United Nations, and relevant ministries, and in maintaining the privacy of data, has proven that Lebanon can achieve a global outreach, adding that the prize was a great achievement that can be built upon for future decision-making.– Caretaker PM Press Office
