Beirut: Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Ministry strongly condemned on Saturday the targeting of UNIFIL in south Lebanon, stating that it awaits the outcome of UNIFIL's investigations to uncover the circumstances of this serious attack.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Ministry issued a statement highlighting the incident amidst ongoing military operations between Israel and Hezbollah. The Ghanaian battalion headquarters, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and located in the town of Qaouzah, was shelled last night. This attack resulted in the injury of three peacekeepers, one of whom sustained serious injuries and was transferred to a hospital in Beirut for medical treatment.
The Ministry emphasized the seriousness of the attack and condemned it in the strongest terms, irrespective of who is responsible. The attack was described as a serious violation of international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, primarily UN Resolution 1701. The statement reiterated a categorical rejection of any targeting of peacekeeping forces, who are engaged in a noble mission to maintain international peace and security.
In conclusion, the Foreign Ministry expressed full solidarity with the Republic of Ghana and the leadership of UNIFIL, extending wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured soldiers.
