Funeral Procession of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei Begins in Tehran

Tehran: Funeral ceremonies for Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei are taking place in Tehran starting today, attended by large crowds and senior Iranian officials.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, it is not yet known whether Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei's son and designated successor, will attend any of the ceremonies, which are scheduled to span six days. The late Supreme Leader's body is set to lie in state until this evening, prior to preparations for the funeral procession scheduled for Monday through the streets of the capital.

Authorities have declared Sunday and Monday public holidays, stating they expect a turnout of between 15 and 20 million people in Tehran alone. Following Monday's procession in Tehran, the coffin is scheduled to make stops in several cities across Iran and Iraq, with the burial ceremony set for Thursday in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad, the Supreme Leader's birthplace.
