Geagea Supports Electricity Reform and Calls for Urgent Government Action

Maarab:Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea has emphasized the urgent need for the government to address Lebanon's electricity crisis, warning that further delays could exacerbate power shortages, increase generator costs, and put additional strain on households and businesses.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, Geagea made these remarks during a meeting with the party's legal professions department. He discussed Energy Minister Joe Saddi's decision to boycott Cabinet sessions until actions are taken to resolve the sector's financial issues.

Geagea highlighted that the current power plants only fulfill about one-third of the national electricity demand. He attributed this shortfall to decades of underinvestment and spending on fuel rather than developing sustainable generation capacity.

Expressing support for Saddi's reform strategies, Geagea advocated for measures such as activating the electricity regulator, improving collection processes, reducing losses, and attracting private sector investment.

He also defended the proposal for a flexible electricity tariff linked to fuel prices, suggesting that an increase in public power supply could significantly lower the combined costs of electricity and private generator usage for consumers.

Geagea urged the government to transition from merely diagnosing the crisis to actively implementing solutions.
