Italy’s torrential rain casualties on the rise

Regional Government of Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy, announced Thursday five deaths of torrential rain-triggered floods, making the total number at 13 since the storm began.

A missing person is currently reported as well, according to a government statement, as search and rescue teams are on watch, pointing out that the floods annual rainfall averaged one of a full year, affecting 42 towns and cities while displacing 10,000 others, in addition to 34,000 currently living without electricity.

The statement also mentioned that landslides have splayed routes, especially in the mountains areas, while the last section of the 14A coastal highway has managed to reopen, but still on closed.

Under these conditions, the weather has caused physical losses of property amounting to billions of euros, said Gilberto Pichetto, minister of environment and energy security, as the government is about announce a state of disaster for areas affected.
