Beirut: The Political Bureau of the Lebanese Kataeb Party convened its weekly meeting under the leadership of Party President Samy Gemayel to address pressing political matters. During the session, the Bureau released a statement highlighting several key concerns and positions of the party.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Kataeb Party's Political Bureau cautioned Hezbollah against instigating another cycle of conflict and war in Lebanon. This warning arises amid threats from Hezbollah's Secretary-General concerning the imminent end of a 60-day period for an agreement between the United States and Iran. The Bureau emphasized the importance of shielding Lebanon from the repercussions of external conflicts, noting Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf's direct communications with fighters in Lebanon as evidence of Iran's influence.
The statement underscored that Lebanon cannot bear the costs of returning to war, which would heavily impact the Lebanese populace. The Bureau urged Lebanon's executive authority to ensure all weapons are controlled by the State to safeguard national sovereignty and prevent any unilateral actions by Hezbollah that could lead to renewed conflict.
Furthermore, the Political Bureau voiced its opposition to any new tax hikes or measures that would burden citizens without first implementing essential reforms. The Bureau called for reforms in State institutions, efforts to reduce waste and tax evasion, and addressing Lebanon's public financial weaknesses before imposing additional financial burdens on the public.
Additionally, the Kataeb Party welcomed the decision to abolish the death penalty, viewing it as a significant step toward advancing human rights. However, the Bureau expressed its disapproval of the current form of the amnesty law, stressing that justice and the rule of law must be upheld without granting undue impunity.
