Lebanese Army’s Weapons Control Strategy Advances South of Litani

Beirut: The Lebanese Army on Thursday announced its full commitment to maintaining security and stability throughout Lebanon, particularly focusing on the area south of the Litani River. This commitment comes as part of implementing a Cabinet decision issued on August 5, 2025, and aligns with the Constitution, applicable laws, political authority decisions, and relevant international resolutions.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Army Command-Directorate of Guidance issued a statement highlighting that the plan to confine weapons has reached an advanced stage. This progress follows the successful achievement of the initial phase's objectives, which concentrated on expanding operational deployment, securing critical areas, and establishing operational control in the South Litani sector, aside from regions still under Israeli occupation.

The army emphasized ongoing efforts to clear unexploded ordnance and tunnels while processing requests to prevent armed groups from rebuilding their capabilities. It further indicated that a comprehensive assessment of the first phase of the "Shield of the Nation" plan is underway to guide future stages.

The statement also cautioned that persistent Israeli attacks, the occupation of Lebanese territory, establishment of buffer zones, and repeated breaches of the ceasefire declared on November 27, 2024, alongside delays in receiving promised military capabilities, could hinder mission implementation.

The army reiterated its commitment to coordinating with UNIFIL and the ceasefire monitoring mechanism. It expressed gratitude towards participating countries and the American and French teams, acknowledged the cooperation of citizens in the south, and commended the soldiers for their dedication and sacrifices.
