Beirut: Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam affirmed Lebanon's commitment to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) during a meeting with a parliamentary delegation led by MP Melhem Khalaf at the Grand Serail. The delegation presented a letter signed by 86 MPs, supporting the continued presence of UNIFIL in the region.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Premier Salam expressed gratitude for the parliamentary initiative and reiterated Lebanon's stance on the necessity of the UN force's role in southern Lebanon. He emphasized the importance of UNIFIL's three key functions: monitoring, reporting, and coordination and communication.

Salam further mentioned his discussions with the UN Secretary-General, highlighting Lebanon's clear position on the mission's significance. He noted that this sentiment was acknowledged by the Secretary-General in his recent report concerning UNIFIL.

MP Khalaf, following the meeting, reported that discussions with both the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic centered on the critical role of UNIFIL, especially during challenging times. Khalaf underscored the significance of the petition signed by a substantial majority of MPs, showcasing a national consensus to uphold the UN's protective presence over Lebanon.

Khalaf reiterated the essential nature of the tasks carried out by UNIFIL since its inception in 1978, emphasizing the need for continued support for its mission in the south.
