Lebanon Seeks Strategic Partnership with EU Amid Regional Tensions

Baabda:President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon expressed interest in signing a strategic partnership with the European Union during a meeting with Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, at Baabda Palace.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, President Aoun highlighted the interconnectedness between Lebanon's stability and that of Europe, emphasizing the deep historical and cultural ties between Lebanon and the EU. He underscored the values the two sides share, including respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

President Aoun expressed gratitude for the EU Council's decision to consider deploying a civilian-military mission to Lebanon under the Common Security and Defence Policy. He stressed the importance of EU support in transitioning beyond the UNIFIL phase, advocating for any future mission to operate under the United Nations flag.

Aoun updated Kallas on the Lebanese Army's efforts south of the Litani River, in line with the 'Framework Agreement,' and criticized Israel for not implementing the agreement while continuing aggressive actions in southern Lebanon. He emphasized Lebanon's commitment to diplomatic solutions and economic reforms, including the Financial Gap Law, which could facilitate an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

President Aoun also thanked the EU for its humanitarian aid and stressed the necessity of long-term support for Lebanon's reconstruction efforts. Kallas reaffirmed the EU's readiness to assist Lebanon, particularly in supporting the Lebanese Army, Internal Security Forces, and social and humanitarian organizations.
