Mikati, Kheir Discuss General Amnesty Law: A Necessity at This Stage

Beirut: Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati received today MP Ahmad El Kheir, with talks touching on the ongoing parliamentary deliberations regarding the proposed general amnesty law.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, both Mikati and Kheir addressed several core points that ought to be included in the draft law to strengthen it nationally, morally, and legally, preventing any misinterpretations. They agreed to submit these proposed points during discussions in the parliamentary committees tackling this issue.

In this context, Mikati emphasized that "a general amnesty has become a necessity at this stage to address the repercussions of a painful period in the nation's history." He added that this law will help resolve the longstanding issue of overcrowded prisons, where many detainees are either awaiting trial, held without conviction, or have already exceeded the duration of the sentence they would have received.
