Prime Minister Najib Mikati received at his residence this morning Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini at the head of a delegation, in the presence of Italian Ambassador Nicoletta Bombardiere.
During the meeting, Mikati reiterated his “gratitude to Italy for its constant support to Lebanon at all levels.” He also thanked Italy for its contribution within the framework of the “UNIFIL” peacekeeping forces operating in southern Lebanon and the sacrifices of its soldiers for the sake of ensuring stability and security in the south.
Mikati affirmed, once again, Lebanon’s commitment to UN Security Council Resolution # 1701, and all other relevant international resolutions.
In turn, the Italian Minister stressed that “Lebanon is of great importance to Italy, and Italy’s presence in the UNIFIL forces reinforces this direction,” pointing out that “four Italian leaders have assumed command of these forces.”
He also emphasized that “Italy supports the work of the Lebanese Prime Minister and the efforts made to carry out the required reforms to address the situation in Lebanon.”
Guerini continued to assure that “Lebanon can totally rely on Italy for its support with regards to negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and other relevant international institutions.”
“As for our support to the Lebanese army, it is full support, and we pledge to expedite the procedures required to deliver this support,” the Italian official maintained.
Season’s Greetings
Meanwhile and marking the glorious festive season, Prime Minister Mikati expressed his warmest wishes to all the Lebanese, and Christian sects in particular, hoping that “the coming days will bring peace and security to all, and that determination and good intentions will come together to save Lebanon and the entire Lebanese from the painful crises they are experiencing.”
“We are determined to overcome all obstacles to reunite the government and complete the steps we have begun to place Lebanon on the path of recovery and rescue,” vowed Mikati.
