Bkirki: Information Minister, Attorney Dr. Paul Morcos, highlighted the need to balance freedom of expression with social responsibility, emphasizing that freedom loses its meaning when it harms society or offends others. This statement came after his meeting with Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, following the Sunday Mass in Bkirki, marking the 60th World Communications Day. Morcos stressed that freedom of opinion should not be at the expense of human dignity, national values, or religious and public figures.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, Morcos stated that media professionals are united in promoting responsible expression, especially on social media platforms. He mentioned the intensified efforts by the Information Ministry in collaboration with UNESCO, the United Nations Development Programme, production companies, and the Ministry of Education, to launch awareness campaigns in schools and universities. These campaigns aim to consolidate the educational, cultural, and social structure, addressing issues such as insults, defamation, and hate speech, which fall under the judiciary's jurisdiction.

Morcos further emphasized that social media should foster constructive social and cultural interaction, rather than abuse or slander. He highlighted the ongoing efforts of Lebanon TV and other media outlets in promoting a culture of respect and responsible communication. He also mentioned the proposed new media law, which includes provisions to combat hate speech and regulate online platforms. The draft, reviewed and approved by parliamentary committees and experts, is awaiting final approval in Parliament.

Morcos expressed hope that the proposed law would not be influenced by non-legislative considerations, reaffirming his respect for legislative processes and the separation of powers. He emphasized the continuation of efforts to establish a modern media law that both protects freedoms and regulates communication.
