Wellington: New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed strong disapproval on Wednesday regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in the Gaza Strip, stating that Netanyahu has gone too far. Luxon highlighted concerns about the absence of humanitarian aid and the forced displacement of civilians in the region.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Luxon also labeled Israel’s plan to attack Gaza City as unacceptable. In a related development, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced the country’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state. He stated that a formal decision will be made by Prime Minister Luxon’s government in September, with plans to present this approach during the UN Leaders’ Week.
Peters emphasized New Zealand’s independent foreign policy, saying that while some of New Zealand’s close partners have recognized a Palestinian state, New Zealand will deliberate this matter carefully, acting in accordance with its principles, values, and nation
al interests. He affirmed that New Zealand’s recognition of a Palestinian state is certain, with the timing being the only factor under consideration.
