President Aoun Urges Negotiations for Israeli Withdrawal and South Lebanon Reconstruction

Beirut:President Joseph Aoun has called for negotiations to end ongoing conflicts, emphasizing the need for dialogue to avoid further destruction and loss of life. He highlighted that wars rarely proceed as expected and that peace can only be achieved through diplomatic means.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, Aoun addressed a delegation from the Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church, led by Patriarch John X Yazigi, stating that the primary goals of negotiations include securing Israel's withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territories, the release of prisoners, the return of displaced residents, reconstruction efforts, and the deployment of the Lebanese Army nationwide.

Aoun pointed out that while there is consensus among Lebanese on these goals, disagreements exist concerning the methods to achieve them. He reaffirmed the state's responsibility towards its citizens, stating, "When the south is wounded, all of Lebanon feels the pain."

He further noted that successive wars have hindered efforts to restore state institutions in the south and delayed various achievements, despite progress in economic, financial, administrative, and judicial reforms. Rebuilding trust between citizens and the state, as well as among Lebanese residents and expatriates, remains a central priority.

Aoun emphasized Lebanon's unity and diversity, cautioning against sectarian divisions and political interests that undermine national solidarity. He urged Lebanese citizens to draw strength from their unity rather than seeking external support against one another.

Patriarch Yazigi expressed confidence in Aoun's leadership amid the extraordinary challenges facing Lebanon due to international and regional conflicts. He highlighted the significance of Lebanon's power-sharing system based on Christian-Muslim parity as a symbol of enduring Eastern Christian presence in the region, stating, "We will remain here as firmly as Lebanon's cedars," and stressed the importance of Christian-Muslim cooperation in the country's rebuilding efforts.
