Beirut: In recent months, the Western Sector Command of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), under Italian leadership, has strengthened its role as a vital source of support to communities in southern Lebanon by promoting humanitarian initiatives in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the Western Sector is comprised of approximately 3,600 peacekeepers from five multinational contingents: Italy, Ghana, Ireland, the Republic of Korea, and Malaysia. Constant engagement with local political, religious, and military authorities has been a cornerstone in fostering mutual trust and understanding.
Reflecting this commitment, the Commander of the Western Sector, Brigadier General Nicola Mandolesi, along with the commanders of subordinate battalions, has conducted 395 Key Leader Engagements (KLEs) with representatives of local institutions.
These meetings have significantly contributed to the development of civil-military cooperation (CIMIC), resulting in over 1,600 initiatives in the fields of healthcare, education, and material donations. Medical assistance, in particular, has been provided daily through UNIFIL base clinics (UNPs) for the benefit of the local population.
Among the most impactful CIMIC projects is the supply and installation of three modular structures serving as medical clinics in the municipalities of Aytarun, Burj Rahhal, and Tibnin. The project concluded on 3 July with the official handover of the final module to the municipality of Tibnin.
“UNIFIL peacekeeping forces remain on the ground in support of security and stability along the Blue Line,” stated Brigadier General Nicola Mandolesi, emphasizing that the results achieved are the product of the continuous commitment of the multinational force operating in the Western Sector.
