Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, wished for a new ray of hope in Lebanon after the legislative elections which will be held tomorrow, so that May 15 would be different…”but this wish depends on the vote, the right choice and respect for democracy and the constitution, as well as the formation of a new government as soon as possible.”
“The people should go to the elections tomorrow spontaneously and patriotically, without interference and without financial inducement or security intimidation. Dignity is the embodiment of sovereignty, and decision-making independence stems from a sense of national responsibility,” he said.
“We know the difficulty and complexity of the situation, and we know that change does not come with a magic wand. Therefore, let these elections be the beginning of the right path that will lead Lebanon out of the abyss,” Rahi said, indicating that the state must assume its responsibilities and save the people.
He continued: “No matter the results of the elections, the form of the next government and the type of reforms, the adoption of active neutrality remains the pivotal solution that guarantees the existence of Lebanon and preserves its independence, its stability and its historical and national unity.”
On the other hand, the Patriarch offered his condolences for the passing of the President of the United Arab Emirates, as well as for the Palestinian journalist, Shirine Abu Akleh.
Prime Minister Najib Mikati left Beirut this afternoon, heading for the United Arab Emirates to offer his condolences over the passing of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The Lebanese delegation to the UAE includes: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Abdallah Bou Habib and Lebanese Ambassador to the UAE Fouad Dandan.
