Moscow Monday announced its formal withdrawal from the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty. The Kremlin stated that President Vladimir Putin signed today the law to withdraw from the Treaty signed in 1990. This month, Putin issued a decree on Russia’s intention to withdraw from the Treaty. The Treaty set upper limits for deploying conventional armed forces in Europe, including attack aircraft, helicopters and combat vehicles carrying artillery. In a related context, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned in a press conference Western countries against providing Ukraine with F-16 fighters, adding that Russia “has the necessary capabilities to respond to this step.”
