Salam Launches National Wildfire Risk Management Project

Beirut: Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Tuesday launched the ‘Wildfire Risk Management in Vulnerable Natural Areas’ project at the Grand Serail. This initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and supported by UNOPS and the World Bank, is part of the 2025 national campaign aimed at combating forest fires through a proactive and integrated approach to prevention, preparedness, and response.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Environment Minister Dr. Tamara El Zein highlighted the urgent need to address wildfires in the face of climate disruptions. She noted that over 6,000 fires occurred in 2024, warning of increasing risks due to prolonged drought conditions. Dr. El Zein called for enhanced national coordination and scientific research to inform policy-making and guide effective interventions.

Prime Minister Salam emphasized that environmental protection has become a sovereign duty, asserting that the new initiative is more than a technical plan-it serves as a national roadmap for resilience. He urged collaboration among government bodies, civil society, and international partners to safeguard Lebanon’s forests, which are considered a shared natural and cultural heritage.

The launch event included a presentation detailing the project, a short film showcasing recent wildfires, and a panel discussion with key stakeholders. The event underscored the importance of early warning systems and engaging communities in wildfire prevention efforts. Testimonies from first responders further illustrated the human cost and collective responsibility involved in protecting forested areas.
