UN Human Rights Raises Concerns Over Continued Military Operations in Southern Lebanon

Baku:UN Human Rights has expressed deep concern over the ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, which persist despite a ceasefire. Recent reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes, drone attacks, shelling, and explosions have occurred in several areas, including Jezzine, Marjayoun, Nabatieh Fawqa, Bint Jbeil, Hermel, and Tyre districts.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, the situation is particularly dire in areas still occupied by Israeli forces, where civilian infrastructure such as homes, schools, healthcare facilities, water networks, and farmland are being systematically destroyed. This destruction has resulted in entire villages and towns being nearly wiped off the map, making the return of thousands of displaced residents unlikely. These actions constitute significant violations of international humanitarian law, with some potentially qualifying as war crimes.

The ongoing military activities have raised serious concerns regarding the protection of civilians who have already endured years of conflict and displacement. UN Human Rights is especially worried about reports of civilian casualties and damage to protected civilian objects under international law.

The human cost of the conflict is immense. Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health reports that from March 2 to October 11, 2026, 4,387 individuals were killed, including at least 660 women and children, and 135 healthcare workers, with 12,424 injuries recorded. Since October 8, 2023, the death toll has risen to 8,954, with 30,660 injured.

UN Human Rights urges all parties involved to adhere to their legal obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law. Protection of civilians and civilian properties must be prioritized, and any alleged violations need to be independently investigated, with accountability measures enforced. The rights of victims to truth, justice, and effective remedies must be upheld.

As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah enters its fourth year, the focus must remain on ending the cycle of violence and impunity. Ensuring the dignity, rights, and safety of civilians is crucial for achieving a just and lasting peace.
