Sidon:UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jean Arnault, has confirmed the United Nations' commitment to assisting the Lebanese state and communities in the South and Nabatieh regions, regardless of future decisions about international forces in the area.
According to National news agency - Lebanon, Arnault made these statements during a meeting with Acting South and Nabatieh Governor Mansour Daou at the Sidon Serail. The discussions centered on the current situation in the region.
Arnault emphasized that the South is experiencing significant pressure due to ongoing attacks, and he underscored the UN's support for state institutions and impacted communities. He highlighted the UN Secretary-General's call for the international community to maintain a presence in South Lebanon, even if it is reduced, to prevent security or humanitarian vacuums resulting from the withdrawal of international forces.
The ultimate decision regarding the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) rests with the member states of the UN Security Council. Arnault called on the international community to create alternative mechanisms to prevent a vacuum if UNIFIL's mandate is not renewed.
He reassured the residents of South Lebanon and Nabatieh that they can continue to depend on the support of the United Nations.
